As the oil and gas regulator in Brunei, the Petroleum Authority of Brunei Darussalam (PA) supports the industry by sharing our knowledge and expertise through conferences and workshops.

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) organised a “Decommissioning and Restoration – Fostering Excellence through Regulations, Innovation, and Sustainable Practices” workshop at The Empire Brunei from 30th until 31st July 2024. The workshop fostered discussions and knowledge sharing among participants to shape a sustainable, responsible approach to decommissioning and restoration.

The Permanent Secretary (Energy) at the Prime Minister’s Office, YM Dayang Hajah Farida binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Talib, offically opened the workshop and highlighted the importance of these events for the industry to share and learn best practices for a growing industry.

Following the opening, YM Hj Idris Mohd Jaafar chaired a panel session that explored the unique regulatory challenges encountered by operators and regulators in the decommission and restoration sector. It examined how these challenges can be turned into actionable opportunities that benefit all stakeholders. Other guest speakers for this panel session included YM Shamir Salahudin, MD of PA, YM Francis Norman, CEO and Managing Director of Centre of Decommissioning Australia (CODA), YM Ariff Irfan Zainai, General Manager (Asset Decommissioning) of Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM) Petronas and YM Ping Teo, Senior Manager (Decommissioning) of The International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP).

The session ended with a Q&A session from the attendees.

A total of 25 papers were discussed over the two-day period ranging from new technology applications to efficient execution programs. The topics for the papers presented can be found at this link: Schedule | SPE Workshop: Decommissioning and Restoration (spe-events.org)
